RETHINKING GLOBALIZATION

Economic nationalism, pandemic and war have not stopped globalization, meaning international trade and exchange within so-called global value chains. They have certainly slowed it down, but it looks like we are facing an irreversible phenomenon stimulated by technological progress. Today, however, we are paying the price of the effects of that sweeping globalization that revolutionized the planet at the end of the last century and at the beginning of the new millennium.

“In many countries” says Tito Boeri, the Festival’s scientific director, “that globalization has bequeathed distributional tensions that have often resulted in a large-scale expression of populist movements. And the current geopolitical tensions themselves can be also read as consequences of a too-rapid globalization that has strengthened undemocratic autocracies in some countries.”  Read more

WHAT IS IT?

Scientific research, informal but rigorous dissemination, pluralism of ideas, autonomy from political and economic influences: these are the components of the International Festival of Economics, directed by Tito Boeri, designed and conceived by Editori Laterza and organized with the Torino Local Committee (TOLC).

The festival kicks off in Turin from a public initiative led by TOLC, which brings together the Piedmont Region, Municipality of Turin, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione CRT, the University of Turin, Politecnico di Torino, Turin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture, Unioncamere Piemonte, Turin Industrial Union, coordinated by the Fondazione Collegio Carlo Alberto. WHO WE ARE

Tito Boeri is Professor of Economics at Bocconi University in Milan and Senior Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics (where he was Centennial Professor). He was Senior Economist for the Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Commission, the International Labour Organization, and the Italian government.

From March 2015 to February 2019 he was President of the Italian National Institute of Social Security (INPS). He is the Scientific Advisor for Fondazione Rodolfo Debenedetti (www.frdb.org) of which he has been Director since its establishment in 1998. He is a Fellow of the European Economic Association and of the European Association of Labour Economists. He is also a Research Fellow at the following institutions: the Innocenzo Gasparini Institute for Economic Research (IGIER Bocconi), the CEPR (Centre for Economic Policy Research), the Centre for Economic Performance in London, the IZA (Institut zur Zukunft der Arbeit – Institute of Labor Economics) in Bonn, the Netspar (Network for the Study of Pension and Retirement) in Tillburg. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Covid Economics. Read more
